Essential Desirable
Education/Qualifications
MSc/Fellowship of the IBMS.
Biomedical degree (or equivalent) acceptable to HPC
HPC State Registration
NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology
Postgraduate qualification or equivalent
Participation in CPD program
Management qualification/training
Chartered Scientist status
Work Experience
Extensive experience working as a Senior BMS in a routine cytopathology laboratory
Competency in all aspects of (non)cervical cytology, including routine diagnostic preparation, processing & cytology preparatory techniques.
FNA clinic participation
Managerial and administrative responsibilities.
Diagnostic cytology interpretation
Experience in supervision, training, and teaching biomedical scientists and other healthcare professionals.
Skills/Knowledge/Aptitude
Thorough practical knowledge of cytopathology techniques
Extensive ancillary testing knowledge
Thorough familiarity with microscopes, staining machines, and other essential laboratory equipment
Scientific and Technical:
To participate, where indicated, towards the diagnostic cytopathology service according to local policies and suggest changes to work practices/procedures.
To participate in the collection and preparation of all diagnostic cytology samples, including supervising lab staff on technical aspects of cytology.
To participate in both primary screening and secondary checking and to filter equivocal abnormal smears on a daily basis, to the duty Cytopathologist as appropriate.
To attend specialized FNA clinics (some of which may be out of hours) in accordance with laboratory agreements.
To check consumablse/stock on a weekly basis and prepare requisitions for purchase as required.
Participate in troubleshooting and problem-solving relating to equipment and methodologies.
To maintain professional competency in the delivery of a quality service.
To act as Health & Safety representative for the cytology department and assist the Departmental Safety Officer.
Training and Development:
To represent the cytology department as sub Training Officer.
To ensure scientific and technical skills are maintained for state registration, attending technical and scientific meetings, and training courses as appropriate.
To comply with departmental Training Support policies.
To assist in the updating of SOPs in the provision of the cytology service.
People management:
To sub-organize the rota to ensure that the service is covered at all times, making the most effective and efficient use of staff time, including the regular rotation of staff through the laboratory sections.
To deal with staff issues and complaints in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Quality Management:
To assist with quality assurance and ensure compliance with quality standards.
To ensure the implementation of internal and external quality assurance programs and ensure that all work is performed to the highest standard.
To assist in addressing all risk management and audit issues within cytology.
To participate, supervise, and assist in the preparation of internal quality control and external quality assurance programs of (non) gynecological cytology specimens.
To maintain laboratory equipment following departmental policies and procedures.
