Job Summary:

As a Specialist Cardiac Physiologist, you will be responsible for performing and reporting transthoracic echocardiograms independently to British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) standards. This role involves working with a diverse patient population, including those with complex cardiac conditions, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Echocardiographic Procedures: Perform and report transthoracic echocardiograms, including complex cases such as inherited cardiomyopathies, oncology patients, stroke, and high-risk inpatients in intensive care settings.

  • Independent Reporting: Utilize initiative and problem-solving skills to report complex diagnostic echocardiograms without supervision, upon achieving departmental sign-off.

  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Participate in a multidisciplinary team delivering specialist echocardiographic services, liaising with cardiac outpatient medical and nursing staff, cardiac surgical teams, heart failure nurse consultants, arrhythmia nurse specialists, and cardiac rhythm management and electrophysiology teams.

  • Patient Communication: Communicate effectively with a broad range of patient groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly, providing empathy and emotional support when required.

  • Research Participation: Contribute to departmental research programs by supporting research protocol development, performing echocardiograms in accordance with research protocols, and analyzing technical and clinical research data.

  • Team Development: Act as a role model for junior members of the team and contribute to their development through mentorship and training.


Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications:

  • BSc in Clinical Physiology (or equivalent).

  • BSE/EACVI accreditation (or equivalent).

  • Evidence of continued professional development.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification.

Essential Experience:

  • Proficiency in performing and reporting transthoracic echocardiograms to BSE/EACVI standards.

  • Experience in performing imaging and reporting stress echocardiograms with limited supervision.

  • Experience in mentoring junior colleagues.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience providing technical assistance in the performance of transoesophageal echocardiography.

  • Experience in performing intravenous (IV) cannulation.

  • Experience in performing 12-lead electrocardiograms.

Essential Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workloads and demonstrate initiative.

  • Ability to cope with a heavy workload.

  • IT literacy.
