IMC locums are currently recruiting for Band 7 Histology Biomedical Scientists in the London.
This is an on going contract working Monday-Friday with potential evenings.
About the role:
Main Responsibilities
·To organise your daily duties in the provision of a quality service.
·To be accountable for your own professional actions and maintain high personal standards of work.
·Work in a safe manner in accordance with department and trust health and safety and risk management policies.
·To maintain a high standard of confidentiality and always comply with relevant Trust policies.
·Prioritisation of your workload and to take part in the daily routine and specialist work of the department.
·Prioritise clinically urgent and 2WW cases and maintain the workflow of all cases through the lab to meet turnaround times in line with departmental KPIs.
·To undertake all activity appropriate to the role to support the Pathology Quality Management System, including the use of QPulse for the production, maintenance, and update of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
·With suitable training participate in quality audits as required and suggest and implement quality improvements as required.
·To use experience, knowledge, and judgement to make decisions on laboratory results. To interpret complex multifactorial results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory procedures. e.g., microscopic crystal analysis and reporting of synovial fluid aspirates.
·Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with standard operating procedures.
·To ensure that appropriate preventative maintenance has been carried out on laboratory equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations
·To undertake analytical, technical, and administrative troubleshooting to ensure reliable service delivery.
·Perform requested tests in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
·To undertake technical validation of the results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory quality procedures and protocols.
·To recognise, document and take corrective action when quality control or assurance procedures indicate loss of performance of the laboratory instruments or methods.
·To have the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time whilst processing samples or examining slides under the microscope
·Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals and to refer on to appropriate specialist’s requests for information outside their own area of responsibility.
·To be able to cope with unpredictable workload and maintain quality despite frequent interruptions for ad-hoc queries.
·To participate on the designated persons rota, taking responsibility for overseeing the flow of work through the laboratory and identifying and troubleshooting bottlenecks and identifying and communicating potential delays.
·To participate in effective stock control of reagents and consumables in all sections of the laboratory.
·Deputising for senior BMS staff as necessary
·To keep up to date with current scientific and technical developments and to propose service developments/ improvements to the senior BMS team.
·The description, dissection, and sampling of histopathological specimens in RCPath/IBMS Categories A through to D with reference to the clinical information provided on the request form.
·The organisation, staining and scoring of IHC and CPT External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes slides and retrieval of in-house slides for assessment.
·Work with the quality manager, laboratory managers and the senior team to ensure compliance with ISO 15189 standards for medical laboratories.
·Complete reports via the RADAR reporting system for any accidents, incidents or near misses.
·To keep up to date with competence assessments following completion of training and to assist in the competency assessment of other staff.
·To be proficient in the use of the laboratory LIMS and to troubleshoot operating issues.
·Support service development.
·Attendance at diagnostic clinics to provide technical assistance, as required.
·Participate in the provision of a 7/7 laboratory service as required.
·Any other duties as required by the laboratory management and senior teams.
·Although there is no formal on call there will be a need for occasional out of hours/weekend work on an as available’ basis.
