Role Overview:
As the IT Specialist (Medical Scientist), you will play a vital role in ensuring the hospital’s laboratory information and technology systems operate seamlessly. Your responsibilities will encompass IT support, problem-solving, software and hardware management, and compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, you will contribute to the strategic development of IT services within the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
Information Technology:
·Provide comprehensive support for the laboratory’s IT systems, including the LIS, Q-Pulse, Hanwell, and associated infrastructure & applications.
·Respond promptly to requests for IT assistance and troubleshoot issues within the laboratory.
·Collaborate with Lab Managers and designated officers to implement software and hardware infrastructure changes or upgrades.
·Manage the rollout of software and hardware infrastructure projects from an operational and administrative perspective.
·Liaise with HSE OoCIO and IT suppliers/vendors on IT-related activities.
·Facilitate the rollout of National IT projects, including initiatives such as MedLIS.
·Ensure compliance with quality management, accreditation, ICT, and data protection standards.
·Administer IT application user accounts and passwords.
·Support research and data mining activities.
·Collect, interpret, and present relevant data and information.
·Stay informed about industry trends and developments in IT, ensuring the laboratory is well-prepared to adopt new technologies.
·Collaborate with other IT Scientists in the region and coordinate IT-related activities.
Service Management:
·Contribute to the development of laboratory services that align with clinical requirements and organizational goals.
·Identify and implement operational processes to optimize resource utilization.
·Keep the Laboratory management team informed of significant IT developments and innovations.
·Ensure compliance with ethical and legal requirements and maintain relevant records.
·Collaborate with local, regional, and national groups on research projects, including academic partnerships.
·Provide output for inclusion in local, regional, and national publications, including scientific writing.
·Identify and maximize resource utilization within the service and identify requirements for future needs.
·Promote a patient-focused orientation in service delivery.
·Contribute to the production of annual departmental and relevant reports.
·Assist in determining departmental policies for service improvement and resource requirements.
·Take a lead role in relevant areas of the routine laboratory service.
·Ensure compliance with laboratory record-keeping policies.
·Oversee the performance, maintenance, quality control, and record-keeping of instruments within assigned laboratory areas.
·Perform verification testing appropriate to a multi-disciplinary laboratory.
·Manage consumables and reagent stocks associated with assigned laboratory areas.
·Participate in Hospital and/or external committees as required.

Education & Training:
·Maintain a personal training/retraining record as per Pathology Department policy and CORU requirements.
·Engage in performance review processes, including personal development planning.
·Arrange and document training for laboratory staff, including new and existing medical scientists.
·Facilitate arrangements for educating and training undergraduates and post-graduate students.
·Ensure sufficient cover for the service during your absence, including training and competence assessment.
Staff Management:
·Assist in managing laboratory staff resources, including staffing levels and skill mix.
·Promote a professional, dedicated, and collaborative team approach.
·Foster healthy working relationships and encourage initiative among staff.
·Implement hospital HR policies as required.
·Supervise and ensure staff competence in IT-related procedures.
