We have a fantastic opportunity for a locum Physiotherapist to join a leading teaching hospital, based in Birmingham. The post holder will act as an experienced practitioner for Occupational Therapy within the Adults Community Services Division.
The post holder will ensure access to urgent and routine Occupational Therapy assessment and interventions. Provide and monitor treatment programmes at home to maximize independence and refer to other services if appropriate. They will work in partnership with patients, carers and other health and social care agencies to promote independence and develop individual plans of care relevant to person needs
Job Description
- To be responsible for the provision of Occupational Therapy within the Division in a variety of settings.
- To be responsible for prioritising team and own caseload and assisting junior staff, Rehabilitation Technicians and Rehabilitation Assistants to manage their caseloads ensuring effective handover of caseloads during periods of absence.
- To actively contribute in the promotion and development of Falls Awareness, in conjunction with partner agencies raising general awareness within the community with the aim of reducing falls risk factors.
- To ensure, where possible, that all intervention is evidence based, utilising appropriate outcome measures when applicable.
- To assist in setting professional and service standards and participate in the auditing of these standards.
- To be professionally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work, including the generic and or specialist assessment of patients with a variety of conditions, ascertaining appropriate information, analysing their physical, social and psychological needs and sign posting to the appropriate professionals within the team and/or external agencies.
- To assess, reassess and provide appropriate occupational therapy interventions and treatment programmes based on sound clinical reasoning and tailored to fit regularly reviewed patient-centred goals. To ensure delivery of these programmes within the EICT parameters of intervention.
- To act autonomously in clinical decision making, seeking advice where necessary.
- To undertake lone working within a Community setting and be responsible for clinical risk management within that environment.
- To take responsibility for the delegation to Rehabilitation Assistants and Rehabilitation Technicians and to supervise these staff in line with RCOT guidelines and Trust guidelines
- To communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and ensure understanding of the condition and its implications. To recognise barriers to understanding and employ alternative communication systems or seek advice.
- To communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, carers, families and staff regarding diagnosis and possible prognosis.
- Create an environment where patients are able to be at the centre of their own care and decision making processes. Be sensitive to the needs of individuals at all times. Respect the dignity, wishes and beliefs of patients, involving them in shared decision making and obtaining their consent to treatment and onward referrals.
- Safeguard individuals from abuse by reporting any incidents involving potential or actual abuse and acting upon concerns immediately. In accordance with Trust policy.
- To deliver a range of treatments which will include the manual handling of patients and equipment including carriage and fitting of equipment, and adapting the home environment to maximise safety.
- To be responsible for assessing ordering and advising on safe use of equipment by staff, patients and carers, including carriage and fitting of equipment, ensuring onward referral to other providers where appropriate.
- To be an active member of the inter-disciplinary team and participating in staff meetings.
- Participate in clinical audit and professional development activities in relation to the delivery of Occupational Therapy across the Service.
- To ensure that informal/formal supervision of junior staff, students, Rehabilitation Technicians and Rehabilitation Assistants takes place on a regular basis.
- To demonstrate awareness and sensitivity of social and cultural diversity of patients, families and staff and to act appropriately.

Position Requirements
- HCPC Registered
- 3 month (minimum) locum assignment to start as soon as possible
- Full time hours (Monday – Friday)
- The successful candidate will be working within a strong team.
- Minimum of two years postgraduate experience
- Previous clinical experience performing a similar role within a Community setting
